Van waar kom bewareas
Van waar kom bewareas
First Known Use of conservancy 1667, in the meaning as a board regulating fisheries and navigation in a river or port.
In South Africa Conservancies began in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands and have enjoyed great success there. The first conservancy was established in 1978 in the Balgowan district of the KwaZuluNatal Midlands and was formed by local farmers with guidance from the then Natal Parks Board. The primary objective was to protect game on the farmlands, this being the first step towards protecting natural areas outside formally protected reserves.
Since then the conservancy concept has grown and is to be found in all provinces in South Africa and in other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, in a multitude of varying environments.
Definition:
- Conservancy is used in the names of organizations that work to preserve and protect the environment. – https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/conservancy

- An organization whose aim is to protect natural areas or interesting and important places, and the animals and plants living in them. https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/conservancy
- The protection of plants and animals, natural areas, and interesting and important structures and buildings, especially from the damaging effects of human activity https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/conservancy.
A conservancy is established by a voluntary agreement between two or more landowners to manage the environment. Conservation objectives are achieved by co-operation and commitment to the conservation of the environment on private property. South African Conservancies began in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands and have enjoyed great success there. Through co-operation between the farming community and conservation authorities this concept has grown into a national conservation movement. It has spread to all the provinces with KwaZulu-Nation as the core where more than a million hectares are protected in conservancies. Conservancies are not necessarily restricted to agricultural areas, as they can also be established in urban and industrial areas.
Conservancies have to deal with a multitude of problems: illegal mining activities, dumping of refuse, overgrazing, veldfires, game poaching, theft of plants and rocks, tree-cutting, alien vegetation – to name a few.
Daar bestaan ‘n oorsigrol oor alle bewareas vanaf die National Association of Conservancies in South Africa (NACSA) – Nasionale Vereniging van Bewareas in Suid-Afrika (NVBSA).
Does a conservancy have any legal “clout”?
No. However with staff shortages and often a lack of resources, your local nature conservation authority can greatly benefit from your vigilance in reporting any environmental contraventions and crimes.
