SWELLENDAM NATURE PARK
SHHH - its not official yet
Swellendam Municipality is considering opening a 40Ha area between Masbiekerskloof and the dams to be used as a public Nature Park. Council will meet in May to discuss the proposal.
The old pine plantation will be thinned out and only the best and biggest pines left for shade and beauty. The area will be cleaned and cleared to allow walking, hiking and relaxing.
The benefits are numerous:
-
It is 42.7Ha accessible from the town to the dams and up until Marloth
-
This area is already a beautiful place to walk and be in nature, this proposal will just make it more accessible and enjoyable
-
It will be a continuation of the Masbiekers kloof walks taking people from town all the way to the dams.
-
It will save thousands of litres a day that the alien trees would have sucked out of the dams
-
The area is a major fire risk and when thinned will be easily manageable

The valley at the back of the old VF park was overgrown and neglected, thick with invasive bluegums and black wattles. Clearing paths and planting trees we’re trying to regenerate not just the woods but the community too. It's a community project that aims to bring together residents, schools and visitors to our beautiful town.
