Those of you who know 'Mrs Gram' in real life will know that she is very talkative and gets over-excited about the smallest of things. So if you read somewhere that she is speechless - you'd probably think - 'that's a first!' (After a sigh of relief.)
|
|
The thing is that the events of the past days for the Travelgram team have been so overwhelming and incredible that all of us involved have been frequently lost for words. But- Mrs Gram is actually NOT going to stop talking about them for a long time - ad nauseam - so be prepared to have your ears bent if you meet up with her.
|
|
The full story about how a great bunch of teenagers arrived in Swellendam and threw themselves into some taxing challenges - and how the people they met and worked with embraced the opportunities and gave of themselves and their time - will be published on www.travelgram.co.za as soon as we have all recovered.

- One group is working on the allotments at the Unity Food Garden
- One group is working on a production with Railton Foundations Drama developmet at Freek Oerson's Shack Theatre
- One group has painted an awe-inspiring mural on a building in Suurbraak
- The final small group is making a video documentary about the whole project, and will complete it on their return to school
|
They have also had time to visit the Heritage Quarter, Barrydale (Net vir Pret - where they were entertained and joined in with the riel dansers and the drummers) Suurbraak, Kwetu Guest Farm, and they have stayed at both Kam'bati and Umshanti (where they will be doing the boat cruise canoeing etc. )

The students did fund raising events before arrival - on their last day they will be presenting gifts to the SPCA, and care packages to the elderly in Railton. One of the students brought masses of gardening tools to donate - and the group also bught a water pump from SSK to help them irrigate the allotments.
|
|
They have had the most AWESOME hospitality - with incredible food from Grace and Merci, Mez Karoo, Republic Restaurant and last night at Greenlands where they were enthralled by the gifted talents of the Zolani Choir, with whom connections and friendships instantly blossomed over music and food. Tonight Woodies will be pulling out all the stops as always - and they will finish off their week with a spit-braai at Umshanti.

TravelGram (Global Partnerships) is setting up itineraries and packages for adults and young people who like to 'travel with a purpose'. We are building relationships with overseas schools and organisations to cater for groups (the packages include a Cape Town bit at the beginning and safari or conservation project at the end) We are so proud that Swellendam provides the ideal context for these experiences and grateful that people have been so willing to work with us.
