PILOT WEEK 2:  March 26/27/28

A light-hearted, informal and fun introduction; tailored for beginners and novices, run on the basis of a demonstration/participation workshop. An immersive and enriching experience. A brief and basic history of clay work through the ages including the work and philosophy of some current studio potters.
*Introduction to the studio and how it functions.
*Handwork techniques which will include clay preparation, pinch pots and coil pots.
*Demonstration on the potter’s wheel and some discussion.
*An opportunity for those who wish, to try the wheel under the instruction and guidance of an experienced potter with many years’ experience.
*Some time spent on finishing and a discussion on glazing and firing.

What to bring with you: *Appropriate clothing – something old that you don’t mind getting splashed with clay. (clay will wash out of clothing very easily) *Any pottery/sculpting tools that you may have *Towel *Apron *Notebook with pen *Camera

About the Facilitators

David Schlapobersky and Felicity Potter are prominent South African Studio Potters; a partnership specializing in high temperature stoneware and porcelain for more than 45 years. Their work has been exhibited widely both in South African and abroad, and they continue to exhibit and work on private and corporate commissions. Over the years, they have facilitated workshops throughout the country, at the studio in Swellendam and before that at their Johannesburg studio. They moved their studio to Swellendam 23 years ago and the courses will be presented in their working pottery studio in the grounds of their heritage house ‘Bukkenburg’, in the historic heart of town.


COURSE TIMES: The course will start promptly at 14h00, and the first workshop/module will end at 17h00. There will be a break with coffee provided.
Each day, participants should gather at the designated venue at 8h30 for coffee. Courses start promptly at 09h00. Please bring your own lunch.
The courses will end at 17h00 each day except the last, when they end at 12.30.
Participants are requested to complete and submit a Course Evaluation Questionnaire at the completion of the course.
