Short Summary: 

The main responsibility of this position is to ensure that good laboratory practices are followed, quality testing is conducted and reported and to take full responsibility for the handling and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for verification of routine QC performed before (Raw materials receiving), during (Press, Extraction plant, Neutralizing, Acid oil, Bleaching and Deodorizing) and after (Oil cake, final product, CoA-purposes) crushing and refining of edible oils, before results of samples or processes are recorded and reported
  • Ensure that the detail on the Load Sheet (e.g. seal no’s, batch numbers, item codes, customer names, etc.) is transferred correctly to the documents that accompany each delivery (e.g. test report)
  • Ensure the correct calculation of quantities of antioxidants and anti-foam recorded on the load sheets
  • Ensure each customer has a fully and correctly completed Test Report
  • Daily and weekly verification checks
  • Raw materials (Seeds/oils/packaging) – inspection of Goods Received
  • Management of retainer and shelf life samples
  • Preparation of chemical solutions and standards
  • Sample preparation from set test methods
  • Strict adherence to Lab safety, PPE & Food Safety rules & regulations
  • Compiling daily test reports
  • Involvement with laboratory projects
  • Part of sensory evaluation team
  •  Assist in the training verification of new lab trainees
  • Compile and record data for documentation needed for testing and reports preparation
  • Operate analytical lab instrumentation
  • Maintain and manage accurate and precise documentation
  • Conduct laboratory evaluation of samples
  • Record data on computer following standard operating methods
  • Comply with standard procedures and quality control to improve products
  • Ensure that lab cleanliness and safety standards are maintained
  • Perform visual inspections of finished products
  • Participate in internal assessments and audits as required
  • Supply quality control data necessary for regulatory submissions
  • Perform validations or transfers of analytical methods in accordance with applicable policies or guidelines
  • Participate in out-of-specifications and failure investigations and recommend corrective actions
  • Investigate or report questionable test results
  • Interpret test results. Compare them to establish item specifications, standard test method, or protocols
  • Identify quality problems and recommend solutions

Key competencies:

Education and skills required:

  • B.Sc. degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology or Food Technology. Candidates with a diploma in Analytical Chemistry are also welcome to apply
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in Afrikaans and/or English
  • Computer literate (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)

Experience required:

  • Previous laboratory experience will be an added advantage
