Line Operator


Short Summary:

The main responsibility of this position is to take charge of a production line and its small team. This position will assist the Shift Supervisor regarding the tasks mentioned below to ensure all products are packed according to a planned schedule.



  • Pack product according to Production Schedule as instructed by Packaging Plant Manager and Shift Supervisor, adhering to product specification
  • Assist the Shift Supervisor with setup of all line equipment and it may also be expected from this position to take charge of change overs on production line and report any deviations or challenges faced to the Shift Supervisor if necessary. This includes:
    • Unscramblers
    • Dropdown chutes
    • Star wheel guide
    • Conveyers and guides
    • Low rating equipment
    • Filling machines
    • Capping
    • Labelling
    • Shrinking and sellotape
  • Ensure oil supply line is optimal controlled through correct selection of:
    • type of oil
    • correct tank, valve, pipe and filter selection
    • correct pump operation
  • Effective operation of production line and will ensure maximum line efficiencies throughout duration of shift. This includes:
    • Reacting to deviation
    • Optimal setup of equipment
    • Limit wastage
    • Fault finding and reporting to Shift Supervisor if not able to solve problem on own
    • Effectively handling of machine downtime
    • Ensure downtime is minimised by ensuring any unknown deviations are reported immediately to next level of support
    • Assisting Shift Supervisor with corrective actions
    • Report maintenance issues to Shift Supervisor/ Packaging Plant Manager and Maintenance team.  It will be required from this position to ensure the necessary support is available to maintenance team at all times when working on equipment
    • Ensure final product is packed in correct configuration during palletising, including box configuration and pallet packing configuration according to specification

Raw Material

  • Assist the Shift Supervisor to ensure that correct packaging materials are received per specific product specification
  • Correct quantities and quality of raw materials are received
  • Any deviations are reported to Shift Supervisor and Packaging Plant Manager
  • Completion of documentation related to receipt of materials and
  • All materials are stored safely and in line with housekeeping standards
  • Ensure all damage material is stored in correct identified container and reported accurately
  • Ensure all unused materials are identified, quantified and returned to stores after each production run


  • Ensure continuous process and quality checks are being performed by him/herself and team. 
    The following QC responsibilities will be required by this position:
    • Process control documents
    • Packed material checked list
    • Returns documents
    • Spoils report
    • Barcode stickers
    • Pallet batch ID
    • Sample submission to laboratory
    • Personnel Hygiene check list
    • Master cleaning schedules
    • Glass and hard plastic register
    • Fill level verification and corrective action
    • QC verification and corrective actions to packed products specs
    • Barcode and date coding changes are correct and
    • Any other documents/controls implemented and assigned to him/her
  • Ensure effective housekeeping in his/her area of responsibility including:
    • All staff has the correct PPE to perform cleaning
    • Correct cleaning equipment are available
    • Reporting of all default cleaning equipment to the Shift Supervisor/Packaging Plant Manager
    • Performing cleaning tasks according correct procedure and work instruction
    • The correct type and amount of chemical is available and used to do the cleaning as prescribed in the work instruction and
    • Safe handling of the chemicals used
  • Will comply to safety, food safety, and environmental procedure and as per SOILL Policy.  It can be expected from all employees to be appointed with certain responsibilities as required by OSH act, Food Safety regulations and environmental regulations.


  • This position will be responsible for leading and motivating a small team of line workers
  • Effective time management of the teams
  • Will be available for all training as required and scheduled by management
  • Any other reasonable relevant task allocated by Shift Supervisor or Packaging Plant Manager as required by plant operations

Key Competencies:


  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Fluent in Afrikaans and English
  • Valid forklift license


  • 16 months FMCG Operator/Technical experience
  • Leadership/Supervisory experience will be an advantage

Interpersonal skills

  • Must be able to lead a small team
  • Good time management
  • Be disciplined and reliable
