Meet Geoff Burgess, a volunteer, who works to rehabilitate our injured/orphaned birds of prey back into the greater Swellendam area.
We often have to treat injured birds at the practice, and Geoff has always been so willing to help with their after care. He has a special touch when it comes to the big birds. With the help of his wife Sonya and daughter Leslie-Ann, they have raised and released 3 Eagle Owl chicks, a Juvenile Black Shouldered Kite and most recently a Jackal Buzzard, all during the past few months of 2020.
In the picture Geoff is holding the Jackal Buzzard whose eye is being examined his eye to see if there was any vision left after the bird had damaged it.
Geoff makes sure that they can catch live prey on their own before being released.
Donations in the form of mice, chicken necks, etc. would be most welcome. They can be delivered at Oakhurst Animal Clinic, 8 Station Rd.
