Short Summary:
The main task of this role is to assist with new, as well as renovation projects within the NPD department. Allocated
projects need to be managed independently and will include the below responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
Research
Compiling research documents for potential new ingredients, products & packaging
Research in selected product category, to determine viability of NPD (Gated)
New Product Development
Product formulation according to defined brief
Sourcing of ingredients/packaging where required
Ensuring adherence to relevant food legislation requirements
Ensuring adherence to required endorsements (CANSA, HSFSA, Kosher, Halaal)
Sample preparation
Chemical, microbial and sensory analysis where applicable (internally and externally)
Preparing cost estimations
Optimal pack and pallet configurations
Allocating inner and outer product barcodes
Assisting in label development according to legislative requirements
Production Trials
Arranging product, ingredient and packaging trials
Documenting production trial processes and results
Ensuring samples are allocated to internal and relevant external labs for analysis
Arranging correct labelling and processing of product samples packed during trials
Project administration
Creating MS project lead time documents for all projects
Completing project check List sheets for all new products
Updating project folders on a regular basis
Creating new items and completed bill of materials for products
Completing endorsement applications (CANSA, HSFSA, Kosher, Halaal)
Completing product applications & registrations for DAFF
Proofing product labels to ensure correctness
Arranging invoices, purchase orders and payments of approved transactions
Communication
Communicating and driving new product project requirements with clients (internally and externally) where
applicable
Communicating and driving new product project requirements with suppliers where applicable
Assisting with ad hoc Commercial/New Product Development activities
Key Competencies:
Qualification and Experience
Tertiary Qualification in Food Science/Food Technology or similar science related field
2-3 years’ experience in a retail product development role
Experience and understanding of the food legislation landscape including product, packaging and label
legislation
Computer literate (MS Project, MS Word, Excel, E-mail)
Skills required
