THE BOOK FAIR

Beauty deel in Jan-Hendrik, Matthew & Franklin se leesgenot by Eseltjiesrus.

Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary will soon be celebrating 15 years of their love for books and promoting a culture of reading at the annual Book Fair.  This is an event for booklovers, bargain hunters and those readers looking for special treasures. The Storytelling and Book reading Theatre for children at the Book Fair, was introduced last year to make sure that no one visiting the Fair, is deprived of the joy of reading a good book.

The tables will once again groan under the weight of thousands of new and fresh pre-owned books on a variety of topics at rock-bottom prices.  Whether you are looking for non-fiction, the latest novels, books on travel, poetry, self-help, cookery, children’s or Afrikaans books, you will find both new and fresh pre-owned books. New stock will be put out every day.

LIFE AT THE SANCTUARY

Every book purchased at the biggest Book Fair in the Western Cape, will aid donkeys in need.  Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary provides a permanent refuge for abused, neglected and elderly donkeys just outside McGregor.  Here they are given the opportunity to live out their lives with respect and dignity, surrounded by their own kind, in a protective and natural environment.  Each donkey is cared for and checked daily according to their individual needs and ages.  The Sanctuary is open to the public four days a week to give both adults and children the opportunity to interact with the donkeys on guided tours.

OUTREACH AND SUPPORT FOR GOOD DONKEY CARE

A part of the work of the Sanctuary that is growing steadily is to deal with queries from across the country regarding good donkey care. Most problems arise from ignorance or the misbelief that donkeys do not need regular handling or appropriate care. The help given in this way, no doubt contributes to raising the status of donkeys in the eyes of the public. Each individual donkey that is helped is one less in pain, discomfort or suffering mental anguish.

CELEBRATION OF READING PLEASURE ALSO BENEFITS COMMUNITY

Although the success of this year’s Book Fair in McGregor will once again play a major role in supporting the work done at the Donkey Sanctuary, the community will also benefits from this event.  Work is created, books are donated to schools and libraries in the greater Langeberg area and the Breede Skills Centre will receive all the books read to children in the Storytelling and Book reading Theatre, where the kids can continue hearing wonderful stories.

Booklovers from everywhere are invited to celebrate the pleasure of reading a book at the 2019 Eseltjiesrus Book Fair in McGregor.  Diarise 17 – 19 May 2019 and make sure you are part of the reading action!

DIE LEWE BY ESELTJIESRUS

From Edition 4 of The Gram Magazine 2018

McGregor is a unique, alternative, eccentric and therapeutic village away from the crowds which is home to a vibrant community of artists with top-class galleries and some great little restaurants. Despite being little more than a village, there are wine farms to explore such as Bemind Cellar, McGregor Tanagra and Lords Wineries, nature adventures to be had in Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve with hiking and cycling trail trails, and plenty of opportunities for being creative (eg pottery workshops) and enjoying the arts.

ESELTJIESRUS SE GROOTSTE BOEKEFEES HELP DONKIES IN NOOD. GIANT WINTER BOOK FAIR HELPS DONKEYS IN NEED

ESELTJIESRUS BOEKEFEES, McGREGOR

Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary

In its eleventh year of providing sanctuary and protection for donkeys, Eseltjiesrus promotes the welfare and status of donkeys through a culture of caring, providing a permanent refuge for abused, neglected and elderly donkeys. Here they are given the opportunity to live out their lives with respect and dignity, surrounded by their own kind, in a protective and natural environment.
Each donkey brings his or her own story with them to the sanctuary: the staff and volunteers at the sanctuary are dedicated to returning them physically and emotionally to a state of comfort and dignity.
There are currently twenty donkeys living at the sanctuary – here are a few of their stories:
AMY was overfed by her previous rescuers, in an attempt to compensate for her dreadful past. She has huge pads of fat on her body. Such a friendly girl.

HANSEL and GRETEL were found severely neglected in a forest on a wine estate, desperate for attention. They are about four years old now and are happy and playful, as young donkeys should be.

LULU was found near Barrydale, badly neglected. She had barbed wire caught up around one hind leg, almost severing the tendons. About seven years old, she is the largest donkey with the biggest ears.
From being evasive and cautious, she has developed into a friendly and loving donkey.

ZIGGY was rescued from a “petting zoo” covered in filth but she has bounced back after rehabilitation and is now very friendly and inquisitive.

DONKEY is a large, handsome teenager with a beautiful broad cross on his back- very confident and loves being photographed!

MINDY – a young light brown donkey with a beautiful dark cross on her back – was signed over to the sanctuary after her owners realised they did not have the time or skills.

‘Adopting a donkey’ is one way that funds are raised to create a loving, healthy environment for these beautiful creatures. You choose the amount you wish to give to your donkey. You will receive:

• details of the donkey you decide to adopt
• photo
• adoption certificate
• twice-yearly report
• quarterly newsletter

You will be most welcome to go to visit your special donkey.

The Sanctuary is open Thursdays to Sundays 10h00 to 16h00. There is a little restaurant overlooking the dam and the paddocks, a gift and bookshop – and they even have their very own Eseltjiesrus Wine!
