Under the Oaks Country Market is a monthly market in Swellendam, held under the oak trees close to the Koornland river, behind the Old Gaol Restaurant. This beautiful space, much loved by the vendors and regular customers, was only made possible by the generosity of Rupert and Alida Erskine, who made it available with no strings attached.
There have however been some challenges – lack of visibility to customers, restrictions on food sales and entertainment, no space for advertising material, no wet weather contingency and the inability to attract new vendors.
It was felt that in order to grow into the Country Market that all those involved dream of, the Market needed to become a weekly one, preferably in a permanent space, with advertising boards and banners.
Representatives of the committee inspected several potential venues, and found it difficult to find an alternative which would answer all of these challenges.
The Board of the Drostdy Museum approached the Committee, and asked if the market would consider moving there.
After a presentation by representatives of the Market Committee, reservations having been expressed and resolved through healthy discussion, some very encouraging results emerged. Site inspections took place, and a space was chosen which satisfactorily solved 90% of the current challenges.
Now both parties are working towards a Memorandum of Understanding which will enable a mutually beneficial relationship, growing together with a collaborative and supportive approach. Raymond Januarie joined the committee as the Museum representative, and the future looks very positive.
