Samford Satellite Internet Solutions
Bringing internet connectivity to remote and under-serviced areas
Samford Satellite Internet Solutions, a recently launched division of Samford Solutions, is making its presence known in bringing internet connectivity to remote and under-serviced areas in South Africa.
The COVID pandemic has amplified the need to be digitally connected. With countries going into lock-down, working from home has become the new normal. The unfortunate situation is that a large portion of South Africa have challenges with regards to digitally connecting. It is not commercially viable to lay down fibre in remote and under-serviced areas, ADSL is being phased out and mobile data is still extremely expensive. Remote and under-serviced areas now run the risk of being left further behind in an increasing digitally connected world.
Samford Solutions, with its involvement with MorClick, recognised that one of the only ways to bring internet connectivity to these areas was through satellite. “Satellite connectivity has matured to a point where it is now cost effective to use satellites to connect to the internet,” says Marvin Poole, CEO of Samford Solutions. “The pricing is competitive; bandwidth is available and latency is no longer an issue. Another major benefit is that the terrestrial impact is almost negligible as the only piece of equipment that is land based is the satellite dish.”
Samford recently had the challenge of installing in one of the remotest areas of the Western Cape. They were approached by John Kleyn who owns a farm in the Karoo. “Our driveway is 8km of serious 4×4 track and we do not have any modern infrastructure at all. There is no running water, no electricity and the only way to get any form of communication is to climb a mountain until you get cellular signal!” The farm is 47 km outside of Ladismith, and an additional complexity is that it has a biodiversity agreement with Cape Nature.
Kleyn continued: “I posed the challenge to Samford as the solution had to be able to withstand the rugged nature of the land, cope with extreme weather as well as have a low carbon and visual footprint. Power was a concern as all I had was solar and wind power peaking at a mere 400W, 50W of which runs a fridge. The only storage is 3 x 105 A/h deep cycle batteries. Using a small and simple 150W inverter, there was plenty of power to run the surprisingly small electronics and wi-fi router.”
Samford was able to successfully install a 10mb satellite internet system for John Kleyn. “Leading up to this moment, I had my reservations and honestly did not think that we would be able to have world class connectivity in the middle of nowhere. The Samford team went more than the extra mile to provide us with this, and I am extremely grateful for what they have done for us. The simplicity of the system means we can unplug everything in a minute and store it securely when the baboons and rodent inspectors arrive, when we are away. Technology and nature do not mix well, but peace of mind came as a surprise, to switch off and unplug with no effort was a benefit I did not anticipate. Simplicity is rule number ONE in the bush! Thank you, Marvin”
“To see the look of unbridled joy and disbelief when we completed the job and John and Cathy were able to communicate with the outside world is something that will stay with me forever,” says Poole. “This will definitely have an enormous impact on their lives. I am only now truly realising the impact that we can have on the lives of people who previously could not connect to the internet, but now have that ability.”
