On February 14th, 15th and 16th 2020 something very special is happening in Swellendam. In a magical place, with magical people, magical tricks and magical moments.
A (specially adapted) Midsummer Night’s Dream is going to be performed – in Masbiekers Valley, by people from all over Swellendam. Some well known figures (rumour has it, on good authority, that the Mayor has auditioned) will be taking to the stage accompanied by people young and old from throughout the community. Directed by much loved and very brilliant Freek Oerson with support from Shakespeare guru Mrs Gram, this is going to be an unforgettable event in the history of Swellendam!
If you would like to join in this unique and magical occasion – you can!
“But it’s Shakespeare – it’s too scary / boring / difficult / English / …..”You might think of saying..
SO… to help you overcome your fears, and help you make the decision to come along and audition to act or dance or offer your services as costume designer, or choreographer, or stage hand, or musician here is the story and also a link to a video.
There are three threads to the story …
- The LOVERS
- The MECHANICALS
- The FAIRIES
are HERMIA and LYSANDER, (in love with each other) and DEMETRIUS (in love with Hermia) and HELENA (in love with Demetrius) .
Hermia and Lysander run away into the forest because Hermia’s father wants her to marry Demetrius – who follows them into the Forest, followed by poor lovelorn Helena,. All sorts of mix-ups occurs when PUCK (a fairy) puts a love potion in the eye of a sleeping Lysander – who now falls in love with Helena – and then…. oh well it gets very messy. And funny. But not scary or boring or difficult.
Duke Theseus is to wed his Lover, Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. And if the Lovers can get all their confusion sorted, then they will make it a wedding for all of them together…. so there must be entertainment at this wedding.
And Duke Theseus chooses to see a play called PYRAMUS AND THISBE (More about this later) which is being put together by …
(Who have zero talent – but plenty of enthusiasm) They are busy rehearsing in the same forest where The LOVERS have been getting themselves all muddled up.
The King of the Fairies, OBERON, and the Queen of Fairies, TITANIA, have been having a tiff. OBERON decides to prank her, to teach her a lesson – so sends his rather mischievous sidekick, PUCK, with the love potion (mentioned before). He tells Puck to drop it in her eye so that when she wakes up whatever she sees first she will fall in love with.
And Puck comes across the Mechanicals rehearsing their play for the wedding. One of them is very self- assured – he struts about and he wants to play every part. His name is BOTTOM.
Puck has an idea – and with a swift Magic Trick gives him a Donkey’s Head.
And when Titania awakes – she falls in love with him, and gets all her servants to treat him lone of ike a king
Anyway – all the confusion eventually gets sorted out, everybody ends up with the right person and the play ends with the performance of the play (at the wedding of all the Lovers by the Mechanicals) – which, owing to their overacting and mispronounciations, though supposed to be a tragedy, is hysterically funny!
Confused? Well, it really doesn’t matter – the story is less important than the fun, the confusion. You won’t be tested on it afterwards!
SO IF YOU WANT TO BE INVOLVED…….
