The Three Amigos

(L-R: Marius Swanepoel, Ryan Kleynhans, Martin Niemand )

Remember those long ago days when shopping was not just a necessary expedition for stocking up on groceries and fresh food, but also a social occasion, to meet up with friends, stock the drinks cupboard for the weekend braai, pick up some lunch at the deli? It’s beginning to sound like a dream now.

It was during that long ago dream-time, in December 2019, that Marius, Ryan and Martin began their negotiations to purchase the Swellendam SuperSpar from the much loved Kosie and Mariette Pozyn.

The three of them have been good friends since 2008 when they all lived in Jeffreys Bay – and shortly after Martin’s partner passed away suddenly in April 2019, discussions about starting a business together began, with the search becoming earnest in September 2019.

“We looked at a couple of Spar stores in the Western Cape, but none of them really “talked” to us.  The Swellendam opportunity came up quite by chance when a fellow Spar retailer mentioned that Kosie and Mariette were thinking of selling.” said Ryan.

” When we saw the store on the first day in mid-December we knew this was the business for us, everything about it felt right. “

They officially took over the store on 1 April, and despite all the challenges of taking over a business in the midst of COVID19, they are enjoying the new opportunity immensely

Their credentials are impeccable: Martin comes from a retail background very successfully managing the St Helena Bay Spar for the past 6 years, and Ryan and Marius hail from a corporate background, mostly contact centre outsourcing in the banking, automotive, utilities and wine & spirits industries.

“All three of us are very hands on, we want to get to know our customers and look forward to making a positive contribution to the local Swellendam community. “

Their vision for the store is to build on the success of Kosie and Mariette, taking the store into the future, and providing customers with a pleasurable shopping experience.  They regard the staff in the store as part of their family and see them as a critical part of the store’s continued success.

We are honoured to serve the community during these challenging times.
