NOTICE: OFFICIAL WATER SHORTAGE AND CRISIS – SUURBRAAK AND BARRYDALE

An unpredicted increase in water consumption over the holiday period in the areas of Suurbraak and Barrydale has caused serious concern, for the Swellendam Municipality, regarding water reserves. The Swellendam Municipality implemented Level 1 Water Restrictions in Suurbraak and Barrydale in December 2018, but is now forced to declare the areas as facing serious water shortages. Residents are required to reduce water consumption with immediate effect. Water consumption will then be monitored over the next two to four weeks, before the Swellendam Municipality takes further measures to conserve water.

Level 1 Water restrictions must be adhered to and encompass the following;

  • Use of potable water (municipal drinking water) is for household purposes only.
  • Potable water is NOT to be used for watering/irrigation of flower beds, lawns, vegetables, agricultural
  • Use of flood and sprinkler irrigation is prohibited
  • Washing of vehicles, trailers, caravans, boats, pavements and sidewalks is only allowed by using buckets of NON-potable water.
  • Use of hosepipes is prohibited and must be avoided in all circumstances.

Swellendam Municipality, in the spirit of intergovernmental cooperation, continues to extend the request from the Western Cape Province and the District Municipality to use water responsibly and sparingly. The South African Weather Services does not foresee any substantial rainfall for the following weeks, and expects weather conditions with mid to high temperatures.

We urge residents to take this notice seriously and regard water as a scarce resource, not only during times of drought, but at all times. With your help will we be able to restore our water reservoir levels and prolong our precious water resources and to avoid the implementation of further stringent water saving measures.

Please report any water leaks without delay on 028 514 8500/8552 or after hours on 071 207 9213 or Email:  engineering@swellenmun.co.za

We count on your valued and continued support in this regard.
