Swellendam Neighbourhood Watch Fire Team

In October 2025, the Swellendam Neighbourhood Watch Fire Team—known locally as the Swellendam Buurtwag Brandspan—was established, just weeks before the devastating Bethelkop Fire. That tragedy underscored a critical truth: the need for a dedicated volunteer firefighting team in Swellendam has never been greater. With this year’s wildfire season in the Cape proving particularly severe, and resources stretched to the limit across the region, the Fire Team has become an indispensable part of local emergency response.

Building a Team of Heroes

Training

Six committed members of the Fire Team, supported by SAPS and Law Enforcement, recently completed specialized training in wildfire suppression. They have since been actively responding to fires throughout the area. Overberg District Municipality Fire & Rescue (ODM Fire) Swellendam has also trained the team in their operational practices and now calls them out as a support unit during emergencies. This collaboration has fostered strong teamwork, ensuring faster and more effective responses.
Two members, NJ Lourens and Dylan Knott, have gone even further by signing up as reservists for ODM Fire Swellendam—strengthening the bond between the volunteer team and professional firefighters.

Community Support Makes It Possible

The Fire Team’s success is built on community generosity. Equipment has largely been sponsored by local residents and businesses. Farmer Rene van der Dussen donated a 600L firefighting trailer and Davey pump, while another supporter contributed a flowbin, enabling the construction of a SKID unit on NJ’s bakkie. Additional donations have funded essential gear and PPE, allowing the team to respond anywhere within the ODM Fire area.

Battling the Blaze: A Season of Challenges

December and January have been relentless, with fires breaking out at least three times a week—sometimes several times a day. The team recently played a crucial role in Majoks, where they kept ODM’s pumper supplied with water after nearby hydrants failed. They also assisted in Tradouw Pass and Barrydale over several days, backing up ODM Fire during intense firefighting operations.

How You Can Help

The Swellendam Neighbourhood Watch Fire Team is powered by volunteers and community support. Donations—whether in the form of funds, equipment, or PPE—are always welcome. Every contribution helps the team protect lives, property, and the natural beauty of our region.
