The “16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children” is an international campaign with a strong focus in South Africa. sIts purpose is to raise awareness about the negative impacts of violence against women and children, promote government and civil society action to end gender-based violence and femicide, and encourage everyone to create safer environments. The campaign highlights that it is a public health concern and a human rights violation, with the period culminating on December 10, Human Rights Day. 

• Dates: The campaign runs from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day).
• Purpose: To raise awareness of the impact of violence and abuse on women and children, and to advocate for an end to gender-based violence (GBV).
• South African context: The campaign is a key part of a broader government effort, alongside the “Emergency Response Action Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide,” and encourages community and sectoral dialogues.
• Goals:
  • Create safer environments for women and children.
  • Break the cycle of violence.
  • Encourage men to get involved in combating GBV.
• Theme: The themes change annually, with recent themes focusing on accelerating action to end GBVF and ending digital violence against women and girls.
• Key Dates within the period: World AIDS Day (December 1) and the International Day for Persons with Disabilities (December 3) are also commemorated during this time.

Technology is reshaping how we connect, work, and express ourselves, but for many women and girls, it has also created new spaces for abuse, harassment, and control.

This year’s campaign urges governments, tech companies, and communities to make digital spaces safe and inclusive for all.
