Description
Swellendam Heritage Association Outing to Riversdale
THURSDAY JANUARY 22nd: o8:30
A relaxed morning departure from the Zanddrift Car Park sets the tone for a scenic drive to Riversdale, one of the Western Cape’s most historic and culturally rich towns. Nestled beneath the Langeberg Mountains, Riversdale is known not only for its natural beauty but also for its remarkable heritage collections, preserved architecture, and warm hospitality.
The day’s first stop is the Julius Gordon Africana Centre, a landmark museum housed in the beautifully restored Versfeld House, built in 1880. The Centre is named after Julius Gordon, a passionate collector whose vision helped preserve an extraordinary range of Africana.
Visitors can expect a guided tour through an eclectic and meticulously curated collection that reflects the cultural, artistic, and historical tapestry of Riversdale, the Overberg, and South Africa more broadly. The displays include:
The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes, with additional time available for those who wish to revisit specific exhibits or read the detailed interpretive labels at their own pace.
A Visit to the Ou Tronk (Old Jail)
Just around the corner lies one of Riversdale’s most intriguing heritage sites: the Ou Tronk, the town’s former jail. Built in 1838, the structure is a striking example of early Cape colonial architecture and has been thoughtfully repurposed into a combined heritage attraction, coffee shop, and antiques market.
Visitors can enjoy refreshments at the on-site café before hearing a short talk from the manager about the building’s layered history. The old cells now house a fascinating assortment of antiques, collectibles, and bric‑à‑brac, each room offering a glimpse into the past. The original gallows—used only once—remain preserved as a stark reminder of the building’s former function.
Strolling Up Long Street
From the Ou Tronk, a gentle walk up Long Street offers an opportunity to appreciate Riversdale’s architectural heritage. The street is lined with historic homes, Victorian façades, and buildings that reflect the town’s evolution from a rural settlement to a thriving agricultural hub. Many of these structures have been lovingly maintained, making the walk both scenic and educational.
Lunch at De Doornkraal Vinotel
The final stop is De Doornkraal Vinotel, a boutique wine estate and guesthouse known for its warm atmosphere and beautifully prepared meals.
Set within a heritage precinct, the Vinotel blends Cape Dutch charm with contemporary comfort. Visitors may enjoy a leisurely lunch at a special pensioners’ rate, though participation is entirely optional for those who prefer to explore independently or return home earlier.
