Winner Spotlight: Aphiwe Ndukumbini from Swellendam

  • Celebrated For: Exceptional performance and service in the firefighter challenge.
  • Recognition: Named top winner at the awards ceremony.
  • Affiliation: Western Cape EMS.
  • Quote from GRDM Executive Mayor Aldrin Stroebel:
“I hope the Garden Route treated you well. We hope you go back with your families and enjoy our hospitality and the beauty of our region.”

Aphiwe Ndukumbini from SWELLENDAM in the Western Cape from EMS Rescue Services claimed the title of Overall TFA Champion, beating firm favourite and previous seven time champion Emile Conrad from the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) Fire Services, followed by Manie Gouws from the Westrand N’zuri, who secured third place.

Aphiwe’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and community-mindedness. Originally from the Eastern Cape, Aphiwe moved to Swellendam in 2017 and quickly became an integrated and valued member of the local emergency services, working as a paramedic and rescue technician. His approach to helping others has always leaned toward rescue and lifesaving, highlighting his deep commitment to making a tangible difference.

Despite not coming from a firefighting background, Aphiwe took on the extraordinary challenge of competing in the “toughest firefighter” competitions across South Africa. In a testament to his grit and determination, he competed not only against seasoned professionals but also triumphed, representing his department and community with pride. His competition journey is marked by both physical and mental challenges: the event includes demanding stages like hose drags, climbing scaffoldings, sledgehammer exercises, and running—all in full gear. In a particularly impressive feat, Aphiwe managed to beat a seven-time champion, showcasing not just fitness but a remarkable willingness to challenge himself and improve year after year.

Aphiwe’s path to international competition now hinges on sponsorships and departmental support. While there are structural obstacles—he is EMS, not strictly fire-service—his hope is that his achievements will rally support, recognizing not just personal accomplishment, but the honour of representing South Africa on a world stage.

Beyond work and competitions, Aphiwe is deeply embedded in Swellendam’s community life. He leads fitness boot camps, participates in local running and cycling events, acts that underline his passion for health, teamwork, and uplifting others.

Aphiwe’s story is more than about athleticism; it’s about inspiring those around him to work hard, believe in themselves, and never lose sight of the wider community. Throughout political challenges and moments of doubt, his steady presence and positive outlook make him a source of encouragement. His friends and colleagues know him as someone who, regardless of circumstance, is always striving, always giving back, and always leading by example.
